Edgard Raúl Leoni Moreno: Animal rights and when do they apply

There are many different types of non-profit organizations and associations fighting against animal abuse, and while there is legal base to support something such as “animal rights”, there is a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare that prohibits the punishment of animals.

However, it’s important to come to a firm international agreement regarding animal rights, especially in Spain, where a number of cases on the matter have been taken to court. In the articles mentioned in the Declaration, laws are included covering animal protection and support for organizations fighting against cruel spectacles that make use of animals, such as cock fights.

The Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare was signed in 1978, in London, and received the support of UNESCO. In the Declaration’s preface, it is clearly stated that all animals have rights and that children must be taught to observe, respect and love their pets. However, for many social organizations and movements the Declaration is not enough. “It’s necessary to reach a stronger international position that includes legal consequences, when broken” says Carmen Mendez, president of the Asociación Defensa Derecho Animal (ADDA).
